    Planetary Doshas & Remedies

Learn about common doshas and the sacred remedies to balance planetary energies.

Planetary doshas are specific imbalances created by the way planets are placed and interacting in a Vedic birth chart, and remedies are sacred practices meant to harmonise - not erase - those karmic patterns.

    What planetary doshas are

    • 1

In Vedic astrology, a dosha is a flaw or affliction arising from unfavourable planetary positions, conjunctions, or aspects that tend to create recurring obstacles in key life areas.

    • 2

Classic examples include Mangal (Mars) dosha affecting marriage, Kaal Sarp dosha when all planets fall between Rahu and Ketu, Shani (Saturn) dosha bringing delays and hardship, and Pitru dosha linked to ancestral karma.

    • 3

These configurations are interpreted as dense karmic knots: they do not doom a person, but they show where life will demand extra awareness, discipline, and spiritual work.

You can think of doshas as “pressure points” in the chart where planetary energy is blocked, distorted, or over-amplified.

Major doshas and their life themes

    • Mangal dosha (Kuja dosha)

Mars in certain houses or combinations is said to bring conflict, impulsivity, and stress in marriage and partnerships, sometimes also in property and blood-related issues.

    • Shani dosha

Difficult Saturn placements or periods (like Sade Sati) correlate with delay, responsibility, scarcity, or heaviness around career, health, or family obligations.

    • Rahu-Ketu related doshas (including Kaal Sarp)

Strong nodal influence is associated with obsessions, instability, sudden reversals, and intense karmic lessons in the houses they occupy.

    • Pitru / ancestral dosha

Certain combinations suggest unresolved ancestral patterns, often linked to family disharmony, inheritance issues, or emotional burdens passed down the lineage.

Doshas are read in context of the whole chart: strength of benefics, dignity, aspects, and dashas can soften or intensify these signatures.

    Philosophy behind remedies

    • 1

Remedies are not viewed as bribes to the planets but as ways to elevate consciousness and align the native with the subtler, sattvic side of the same planetary energy.

    • 2

The underlying idea is that by engaging in mantra, charity, discipline, and worship, a person shifts their internal vibration and karmic response, so the outer manifestations of the dosha become less harsh and more growth-producing.

    • 3

Effective remedy work usually combines daily practice, weekly observances, periodic rituals, and lifestyle alignment rather than relying on one quick fix.

You can contrast “fate as a fixed sentence” with “fate as a curriculum" - remedies are conscious participation in that curriculum.

    Types of remedies (with examples)

Each remedy type works on a different layer: mind (mantra), body and habits (fasting), karma with others (charity), and subtle energy (puja, yantra, gemstones).

    • Mantra and japa

Repetition of specific planetary or deity mantras (e.g., Hanuman Chalisa and Mars mantras for Mangal dosha, Shani mantras for Saturn) to purify and focus the mind.

    • Puja, yagna, homa

Fire rituals and temple worship aimed at invoking grace and burning karmic impressions; often prescribed for complex combinations like combined Mars-Saturn-Rahu-Ketu afflictions.

    • Daan (charity) and donations

Giving items associated with a planet - such as jaggery and wheat for Sun, milk and white clothes for Moon, black sesame or iron for Saturn - as an act of humility and service.

    • Fasting and lifestyle vows

Observing fasts on the planet’s weekday (e.g., Tuesday for Mars, Saturday for Saturn) and practising restraint, simplicity, and ethical conduct to refine that planet’s expression.

    • Gemstones, yantras, rudraksha

Under expert guidance, wearing specific stones (e.g., ruby for Sun, yellow sapphire for Jupiter), meditating on planetary yantras, or using Navgraha malas to strengthen benefic potential.

How to approach doshas and remedies

    1. 1

Define doshas as karmic pressure zones: Understand what they are and why they are feared; a nuanced astrologer reads them without fatalism.

    2. 2

Unpack key doshas: Mangal, Shani, Kaal Sarp, and Pitru - each has its planetary logic, psychological feel, and typical life manifestations.

    3. 3

Understand the metaphysics of remedies: They re-tune consciousness and relationship to the planet rather than magically deleting karma.

    4. 4

Map remedies to life practice: Link each graha to colours, foods, donations, mantras, fasts, and behavioural shifts.

    5. 5

Ethics and discernment: Avoid fear-based upselling of costly rituals; stress the importance of personalised, chart-specific guidance and sincere inner work.
